Sunday Sermon - 01/06/2019 - 2 Timothy 2:1ff
Opening Prayer:
O Holy God, you looked upon the whole of humanity and saw the foul baseness of our desires, our plans, our motives; and moved with pity you extended forgiveness to all who willingly submit to the Holy Spirit. You did not reserve the blessings of Jesus Christ to Israel only, but in your infnite and mysterious wisdom you moved to include even Gentiles in your kingdom. Truly you have pity on the lowly and poor, and the lowly and poor in heart! Thank you for your fatherly mercy! Please accept the praises and thanks of your people today. We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Closing Prayer:
O Holy God, we confess that we do not consider with sufficient humility that the precious Gospel message did not originate with us in our day, on this continent, from our culture. We forget that had we been there in the time of Christ, we would have been the outsders, and your words would have boomed loudly in our ears, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” Ours would have been the words, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” O Lord! We hear your smile, your compassion, your mercy in your response, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” Thank you for extending your mercy to all people, even us in our day. Thank you for moving in our hearts and for freeing us from our shame and our guilt! We, too, humbly claim Jesus Christ as our Lord, as the creator and sustainer and savior of Jew and Gentile! Praise be to the God of Israel! Praise be to Jesus Christ for his compassion on all people! And it is in his name we pray. Amen.
