Sunday Sermon - 02/24/2019 - 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Opening Prayer:
O Holy God, you yourself are never worried, never fretful, never dismayed, for no circumstance or chaos or tragedy is outside the view of your all-seeing eye or beyond the reach your all-powerful hand.
There is nothing that is news to you, nothing that is dangerous, nothing that is shocking, for you have known the desires of all hearts and the details of all plans from eternity past.
How humorous and pitiable must our worry appear to you! And how much sorrow must we bring you when we forfeit the joy of salvation over passing pains and transient trials.
Forgive us for our of our worry and our anger. Grant your people release from addiction to worry, that you may be honored in the other-worldy peace and contentment of your people.
We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Closing Prayer:
O Holy God, we confess that we are unskilled in the discipline of leaning into Christ when our desires are dashed and our plans are shaken. We confess that we too often cope with pain using a luke-warm pragmaticism, rarely pondering the spiritual opportunities presented to us in our loss, seeking merely to stop the hurt and fill the void with whatever promises fastest relief.
Please grant your children a spiritual sobriety, a divine clarity of thought, that we would accept every woe as a divinely appointed opportunity to call out to the Savior, to say to him and to ourselves and to each other, “Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief!”
Lord, we believe your holy promise of eternal, abundant life as adopted children of God; help us to believe that you have not forsaken us now! Help us to believe that you are working good through these trials, even now! Help us to believe that you are weaning us off of childish self-centeredness and calling us to divine maturity!
And so may your church stand firm against all assailants and heresies and distractions. And so may Jesus Christ be proven mighty, the preserver of joy and the bestower of other-worldy peace, before the eyes of the unbelieving world.
We pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
